RETURNING CHAMPS
We always enjoy visits from our friends at RapidFire Theatre in Edmonton. Kevin Gillese and Arlen Konopaki showed us some great improv the last few weeks winning our hearts again last Monday. Unfortunately, they are now in Winnipeg touring their show Scratch on the Fringe circuit. Fortunately, and old RapideFire legend has landed on Toronto from his current home in Austria. Catch23 is very proud to present improv supser star Jacob Banigan who will play with Kurt Smeaton this Monday! Never miss this show no matter how many times you go back in time!
CHALLENGER #1
We are very pleased to welcome back once again our friends The Remainders. Katie Crown and Ryan V Hays will not only force you to laugh they will jump into your laughter, drive it like a car and run you over several times. If you’ve never seen these guys before maybe it’s time you grew up and got a job.
CHALLENGER #2
This team is one of the catch23 all time favorites. Pat Kelly and Peter Oldring enjoy loading their hilari-guns with funny bullets and just murdering the shit out of audiences great and small. So bring your chest targets and best dying clothes. This may be Catch23’s second last Monday at Clinton’s but it’s your last Monday anywhere!
Jody Hewston hosts! Graeme Bunton judges! Mike De Eyre swoops down at the last minute and plays a music song! You love it!

Hey, friends! I have some pretty big news to tell you about!
July 28th will be our last show at our beloved Clinton’s. After nearly five years of shows at in the back room of the second oldest bar in Toronto we are moving our show a few blocks down Bloor street to Comedy Bar. Comedy Bar is a new venue that will have amazing, funny shows every night of the week! I’m really excited about launching the show there again in 2009! Wait! Did I say 2009??? Looking back at what I just wrote confirms that I indeed said 2009. Here’s the plan:
Catch23 will continue to show at Clinton’s Tavern for the rest of July (14th, 21st and 28th) then we will move the show to Comedy Bar for the month of August. On our regular Monday nights, of course. After that Catch23 will take a hiatus as I travel to Edmonton to work with RapidFire Theatre’s Scratch before touring the show in Europe for a few months. Once I get back Catch23 will start anew in January of 2009. So what does this mean to you? Well! It means there are only 7 more catch23s this year! And only 3 more catch23s at Clintons! Holy Shit! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHH! Now settle down and go see these soon to be classic catch23s!
Starting with this Monday:
RETURNING CHAMPS

Our friends from RapidFire Theatre in Edmonton have sent powerhouse duo Scratch to perform at the 2008 Toronto Fringe Festival. Lucky for us that means Kevin Gellise and Arlen Konopaki get to stop by the old Catch23 stage and slam a few dunks for the kids! And they did just that last week winning their way to victory! If you can’t make it to see them defend their crwon next Monday why not check out their show at the Comedy Bar this week! Thursday - Saturday @ 10:00, Sunday @ 2:00 at Comedy Bar 945 Bloor st. West!

Falcon Powder have made June the month of victory. Jim Annan, Scott Montgomery and Kurt Smeaton want to make the last Monday in June an example for other Mondays. This week, like all weeks that are only a Monday, the returning champs are faced with teams that are impossible to defeat. Can they find a way through the labrynth of impossible and escape to the freedom of victory?
CHALLENGER #1
They have been burning up Toronto by storm! They have exploded onto the scene forever! They are Pretty Funny and they are pretty funny. Georgea Brooks Hancock and Claire Salloum make their last Catch23 debut ever!

With all the excitement surrounding the Comedy Bar’s opening we couldn’t help but serve Todd’s Lunch to the audience at our show. Gary Rideout Jr., Pat Thornton and Tal Zimmerman deliver a filling comedic meal with all the trimmings. Are we trying to put together the funniest show ever? maybe…..

The Get Ready For It Experience were outstanding last week. James Gangl, Greg Komorowski and Sir Tom MacKay were like 2008 UEFA Cup group C powerhouse the Netherlands: unstoppable! These hooligans bicycle-kicked happiness into our hearts. But can they out-soccer this weeks challengers? Of course!
CHALLENGER #1
Actor/Playwright Matthew Edison and Actor/Stuntman Michal Grajewski met on the set of the series House Party airing this fall on the Comedy Network. Now they meet again for 23 minutes of danger and adventure, heroics and misadventure, subadventure and danger! don’t forget Matt Edison is the 1994 Canadian Improv Games gold medal champion so he is gonna blow you away!
CHALLENGER #2
After a brief hiatus to restructure their management team Falcon Powder returns to the birthplace of modern improv: Clinton’s. Jim Annan, Scott Montgomery and Kurt Smeaton are in no mood to fuck around this Monday. They are going to be serious about this thing. Maybe it’s time we all started taking things more seriously. At least once a day I pick a thing, anything, and take it seriously for 15 minutes. Try it!
Jody Hewston hosts you into the ground! Graeme Bunton grades us all on a curve! Mike DeEyre hucks a pile of music at your head! You love it!

Some combination of Jim Annan, Scott Montgomery, Kurt Smeaton and Peter Stevens will return to hold up the championship belt and yell a lot into a microphone. Then the pyro will go and their themesong will play and all the in your face action of the WWE will rock the Hamilton Wrestledrome that is Clinton’s Tavern.

Falcon Powder continued their winning ways last week by once again receiving more points than the other teams. This streak will be placed in severe jeopardy this Monday, however when Jim Annan and Scott Montgomery abandon Kurt Smeaton to see a baseball game. More likely a baseball lame. ZING! Luckily for Kurt Peter Stevens is going to power up his power suit and inject some power comedy into what might could have potetially been a crappy team. Will this reunion of olden champs carry the torch for Falcon Powder? Sure!
CHALLENGER #1
Back by their own popular demand David Dineen-Porter (DDP) and James Hartnett fire it up to the maximum without any of the holds being barred. Watch them get their heads into the game and score some points from the triple zone. Can they grab the spotlight and go top shelf or will a negative sports metaphor happen to them. See it!
CHALLENGER #2
Alana Johnston and Rebecca Kohler use passion and strength as a compass for friendship. They use commitment and joy as a map to truth. They use maps and compasses as a commitment to passion. These ladies of talent will orienteer their way into your heart taking the most pleasurable and bizarre route possible. And if having two women in your heart doesn’t kill you nothing will. Except maybe three women. How many women can you get in there anyway? I absolutely mean literally.
Deborah Robinson hosts! Graeme Bunton assigns the values to fun! Mike De Eyre lays waste to an army of musical notes by crushing them against your eardrum! You like it immediately and forever!

Falcon Powder continues to roll forward down the laneway of victory. Jim Annan, Scott Montgomery and Kurt Smeaton have thwarted two more challengers in an effort many have called “good”. But can this “good” effort keep pace with the rigorous demands of competition or will some other less good or perhaps even “bad” effort replace it? In this classic literary conflict of Good Man vs. Bad Himself one must keep an eye out for Nature and Machine - and this week we have both!
CHALLENGER #1
This time Tad Hargrave is really here. For real. All the way from our friends at Edmonton’s RapidFire Theatre. He will team up with Edmonton ex-pat Ian Rowe just like old times. Also like old times they will dress in Restoration garb complete with powdered periwigs and scandalous calf-revealing olden-pants. Don’t let this fool you: they are still from the future no matter how they dress.
CHALLENGER #2
The handsome and talented James Gangl, Norm Sousa and Sean Tabares return from the grave seeking revenge for the time we all fooled them into thinking they were dead. Not only are they not dead but after drinking a witches life brew they are double-alive! Will they use this to their advantage or to pick up babes?

Last week Falcon Powder became the latest in a long line of champions. How long can Jim Annan, Scott Montgomery and Kurt Smeaton last in the three-seated throne of victory? The answer lies somewhere between a week and forever.
CHALLENGER #1
Pat Kelly and Albert Howell are wiley veterans with enough funny power to blow up the world. Until now they have been generous enough to not abuse this power. Things could change this Monday. Especially if they use their power to blow up the world!
CHALLENGER #2
Our friends from RapidFire Theatre in Edmonton have sent a delegate by the name of Tad Hargrave. He will be on a team with someone! Who could it be? I’m honestly asking that question…

They come from Ghost Jail Theatre (Clinton’s, Sunday Nights!). They are the treat every kid dreams of Cookies AND Booze! The perfect combination of sweet and surly! Kayla Lorette and Ian Rowe are exactly the unlikely mix that you accidently come across while eating whatever foods you have left laying around. Does ground pepper taste good on peanut butter toast? Yes! Do cheese and banana’s have anything to say to each other regarding flavour? Yes! Can Cookies and Booze defend their title against the onslaught of super-talent heading their way? Come find out!
CHALLENGER #1
With Derek Flores they were called Cocks with Swords. With Ryan V Hays they were called Cocks with Ryan. What will Jim Annan and Scott Montgomery call themselves when teamed up with Catch23 veteran Kurt Smeaton? Cocks with Dicks? Cocks That Rock? Wyld Boner? This name could be the most important decision ever made. Tune in in person to find out how it all names out!
CHALLENGER#2
They have become fan favourites at Catch23. Jan Caruana and Sandy Jobin-Bevans have agreed once more to grace our stage with a bucket of talent and a mop of hilarity. These janitors of mirth will pour sawdust of joy on the vomit of sorrow in the halls of your heart. And if you treat them well they will lend you their keys so you can make an illegal copy of them and stay overnight at the school and have sex with your girlfriend in the auditorium!!!!!
The amazing Mike Balazo hosts! Graeme “tough love” Bunton assigns scores! You enjoy a well deserved fun time!

A win is a win is a win. I’s an expression that coaches have been saying since the dawn of victory. But is it true? Is a win is a win is a win? 2 Minutes for Scoring have been exploring that very issue by winning when winning doesn’t seem possible. Peter Stevens and Kurt Smeaton have been able to beat the odds to a pulp time and time again. But this week Kurt will be in Vancouver and likely won’t play so Peter will be left ot his own devices. Can he soar on wings of hilarity without Kurt’s dead weight? Or is Kurt’s dead weight the only thing keeping them afloat?
CHALLENGER #1
Kayla Lorette and Ian Rowe have left the Ghost Jail mothership for the Catch23 superboat. A boat they both know very well and inside and out. If you enjoy fun times and watching fun while fun does improv then you’re in for a F-U-N fun time ’cause these guys are fun! Have I ruined the word fun yet? These guys will fix it!
CHALLENGER #2
You’ll be surprised by who this team is. Especially if you didn’t know that it’s Rob Baker, Adam Cawley and Holly Prazoff, aka, Jack Uzzi. The last time these three Second City Tour Co. heavyweights came to the improv comedy showdown they delivered a family-sized punch to the solar plexus of boredom. This time they aim to murder it and it’s babies. Using jokes. And hilarity knives. Seriously. See this.
